PUM Release v4 and Cleanup!


Dear all, lovely community and PUM players :)

The time has come, for me to make the major cleanup, the step forward. With the release of Plot Unfolding Machine v4, I hereby announce that the previous versions are now superseded by this one, and for the health of the project, decided to make this version the only one.

Fear now, as it has not taken all the weird steps and experiments of V3, but it is more unifying and holding back to core principles. Of course, I failed to promise "final" versions in the past, but I can say with some degree of certainty that this is what Plot unfolding machine is :)

Before you ask: if you are happy with whatever version of PUM you are using, don't worry about all this mumbo jumbo. It really doesn't matter which version you are in, if it works great. If it doesn't, then perhaps this one works better than before (I hope!)

PS: If all goes well, Spanish version will be available soon

Anyway, enough of the babble! Here are some change logs:

  • Scene prompt (formerly designer) is now simplified and open to your interpretation
  • Expectation checker mostly unchanged, just a bit of rewording
  • Challenge (formerly skill) is now more "evocative", more towards shaping the scene, not imposing a solution
  • Gain and Risk (formerly high stakes or goal and risk) reworded to point towards general discoveries instead
  • Circumstance (formerly combat designer) now applies to more than just combats, but challenges or situations
  • Context (new) in here I put everything I wanted to not forget about in my games. These act as scene fillers or flavor.
  • Oracles remained mostly unchanged, if not rearranged or slightly reworded
